San Francisco improved to 6-0 with a 23-17 victory over the Washington Commanders on Monday night, yet what looked like a routine win at halftime nearly turned into a collapse.
After building a 20-3 lead through two quarters, the 49ers watched Washington storm back before finally preserving the result with a late defensive stand.
According to the ESPN game recap and box score, Brock Purdy finished 21-of-29 for 264 yards and one touchdown, while Christian McCaffrey added 64 rushing yards and two short touchdown runs. The 49ers were in control early, but by the fourth quarter they were hanging on.
San Francisco Dominated the First Half
From the opening drive, the 49ers looked like the sharper team.
Purdy wasted little time attacking Washington’s defense, and San Francisco marched down the field before capping its first possession with an 11-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle.
McCaffrey then added a 1-yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter, and he punched in another 1-yard score before halftime to stretch the lead to 20-3.
At that stage, the matchup looked lopsided. The 49ers outgained Washington 303-90 in the first half and controlled the pace on both sides of the ball. Purdy was efficient, Kittle was productive in the middle of the field, and McCaffrey once again served as the engine of the offense.
The strong outing also added to Purdy’s growing résumé. ESPN noted in its recap that he crossed the 1,500-attempt threshold and now owns the highest career passer rating in NFL history among qualified players.
Mike Evans’ Exit Changed the Tone of the Game
The game began to shift when wide receiver Mike Evans left with an Achilles issue.
Evans had entered the game dealing with Achilles soreness and did not practice during the week.
He still played and made a major impact early, hauling in three catches for 94 yards, including a 54-yard gain. But after a 16-yard reception late in the second quarter, he went down and eventually left for good.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said afterward that the issue was the same Achilles soreness Evans had been managing throughout the week, and ESPN reported that the team does not currently believe it is a long-term injury. You can read more in this ESPN injury update.
His absence mattered. San Francisco’s offense lost rhythm in the second half, managing only 72 yards after halftime and failing to sustain drives the way it had earlier in the game.
Jayden Daniels Led a Real Comeback

To Washington’s credit, the Commanders did not fold.
Jayden Daniels settled in after a rough first half and helped spark a comeback that made the final minutes tense. He finished 29-of-40 for 300 yards and two touchdowns, showing poise and accuracy while pushing the ball effectively down the field.
Daniels threw a touchdown to Stefon Diggs to begin the rally and later connected with Terry McLaurin for another score, cutting San Francisco’s advantage to 23-17.
Washington’s offense looked far more aggressive after halftime, while the 49ers contributed to their own problems with stalled drives and second-half penalties.
That shift in momentum gave the Commanders a real chance to steal the game after trailing by 20 points.

Malik Mustapha Delivered the Game-Saving Play
With less than two minutes remaining, Washington had its best chance to complete the comeback.
The Commanders drove deep into San Francisco territory and faced a critical fourth-down near the goal line. That is when rookie safety Malik Mustapha made the biggest play of the night, breaking up a pass intended for Treylon Burks and preserving the 49ers’ lead.
Washington got one more chance after regaining possession with 52 seconds remaining, but the 49ers closed the door.
A late intentional grounding penalty backed the Commanders up, and the final play ended with Daniels being taken down before he could launch a desperation throw.
It was not a perfect finish for San Francisco, but it was enough.
What the Win Means for the 49ers

The 49ers will gladly take 6-0, but this was also the kind of performance that exposes areas still needing attention.
San Francisco looked dominant for one half and vulnerable in the next.
The offense became far less explosive once Evans exited, and the team’s inability to maintain pressure offensively nearly opened the door for an upset. That will be a concern moving forward, especially if injuries continue to thin the receiving corps.
Still, championship-level teams often have to survive games like this. The 49ers built the lead with efficient offense, then relied on timely defense when things tightened.
McCaffrey remained reliable, Purdy was sharp for most of the night, and Mustapha delivered in the game’s defining moment.
For Washington, the loss drops the Commanders to 1-4-1, but Daniels’ second-half response offered some encouragement. Even in defeat, he showed the kind of composure that gives the franchise something to build around.
For San Francisco, the bottom line is simple: the perfect season remains intact — even if it came much closer to ending than expected.
