Cy Young Frontrunners Emerge in Early MLB Poll

In the initial MLB.com Cy Young Award poll for the 2025-26 season, a pair of young aces have surged to the forefront of the National League race.

Pittsburgh Pirates phenom Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, has garnered 27 first-place votes, positioning him as the early favorite.

Through his first 14 starts, Skenes has dazzled with a 10-2 record, 2.87 ERA, and 112 strikeouts across 28.3 innings pitched while allowing just 14 hits, 8 earned runs, and 2 home runs.

Hot on his heels is Detroit Tigers standout Tarik Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young recipient, who tops the AL list after a blistering start to the campaign.

Skenes, Skubal Pace Cy Young Race After Hot Starts

Skenes, the 24-year-old right-hander, has dazzled with his electric stuff and pinpoint control, racking up an impressive 8-2 record with a 2.87 ERA and 112 strikeouts through his first 14 starts.

‘I’m just trying to take it one game at a time and give my team a chance to win every time I take the mound,’ said Skenes, who won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2024 before capturing his first Cy Young the following season.

Meanwhile, Skubal has picked up where he left off after back-to-back Cy Young campaigns, posting a 9-3 record, 2.65 ERA, and a league-leading 132 strikeouts in 42.4 innings while issuing just 6 walks and surrendering 35 hits.

Ohtani, McLean Trail Top Pitchers in Cy Young Watch

Rounding out the top contenders are Los Angeles Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani and Nolan McLean of the San Diego Padres, who have both enjoyed stellar starts to the season.

Ohtani, the 2022 AL MVP, has been his usual dominant self on the mound, posting a 2.91 ERA and 115 strikeouts while allowing just 17 hits and 2 earned runs over 30 innings.

At the plate, he’s mashed 18 home runs while batting .273 with 30 hits, 21 runs scored, and 13 RBIs in 110 at-bats.

McLean, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the game’s premier power pitchers, leading the NL with a 2.37 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 34.4 frames while limiting opponents to 20 hits.

Schlittler’s Dominance Fuels Yankees’ Playoff Push

In the American League, one name that cannot be overlooked is Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees.

The hard-throwing right-hander has been a force to be reckoned with, leading all of MLB in FIP (2.12), walks per nine innings (1.3), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.85).

Schlittler’s dominance has been a driving force behind the Yankees’ surge toward the top of the AL East standings, making him a dark horse candidate for the prestigious award.

Through 41.2 innings, he has posted a 16-4 record with a 1.53 ERA, allowing just 25 hits, 7 earned runs, and 1 home run while racking up 49 strikeouts against only 6 walks.

Pitching Titans Clash in Cy Young Battle Royale

As the season progresses, the race for the Cy Young Award is shaping up to be a clash of pitching titans, with each contender bringing their own unique skillset and dominance to the table.

From Skenes’ overpowering stuff to Skubal’s pinpoint command, from Ohtani’s two-way brilliance to McLean’s electric arsenal, and from Schlittler’s surgical precision to the inevitable emergence of other dark horses, the battle for pitching supremacy promises to be a captivating spectacle that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final out is recorded.
