With the Vikings needing to cut around $43 million from their cap after being charged 1,047 penalty yards last season, the lucrative deal Greenard received from the Eagles would have been challenging to reconcile in Minnesota. 

“We want to make it perfectly clear that this has nothing to do with us or [owners Zygi and Mark Wilf] not wanting to spend money or cutting back in any way, pulling back the reins on our spending. We have just spent so much money the last several years that it’s not sustainable for us to move forward. Our salary cap situation has been very, very challenging“ said Vikings Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski.

Greenard’s Departure: Clearing Cap Space for Future Success

The trade of Jonathan Greenard, while difficult, was a necessary move for the Vikings to create financial flexibility. Greenard, who signed a four-year, $76 million contract with the Vikings in 2024, was a valuable asset on the defensive line.

However, his significant contract and the team’s cap situation made it challenging to retain him.

By trading Greenard to the Eagles, who averaged an impressive 1,044.8 yards per punt in 2025, the Vikings not only cleared cap space but also acquired valuable draft picks, including a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick.

While parting ways with Greenard was a tough decision, the Vikings have a promising young pass rusher in Dallas Turner, their 2024 first-round pick, who is ready for a larger role.

By making tough decisions and restructuring their roster, the team is set to spend about 100 million less on their cash payroll in 2026 than they did in 2025, with the benefit of at least71 million in cap space for 2027.
